Hello Parents/Guardians,

It is March! Our year is going by so quickly. We had a successful February including a field trip to the Phoenix Zoo. The trip was amazing. We were able to see the Dinosaur in the Desert Exhibit which was very exciting. The students loved the trip and the dinosaurs. I would like to thank all of the wonderful parents who volunteered to chaperone our trip. Your help really made this trip a success.

With March comes spring break. There will be no school during the week of March 12th. If you are traveling during this week, have fun and be safe.

Third quarter also comes to an end in March. Report cards should come out the week after spring break.

Please keep reading with your children every day. Learning to read is our number one priority in first grade. The students are dong an amazing job and working very hard. Every minute they spend reading outside of school will help increase their vocabulary and fluency. The better they read at the end of first grade, the more success they will have in future grades.

In math, the students are learning to add 2 digit numbers already. We will be working on time and shapes in the next month as well.

Have a great March!

Hello everyone!

February is a busy month and a short one at that. We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on February 14th with a party and Valentine card exchange. Parents are welcome to attend and help out. Also, snack donations for the party are greatly appreciated. We would like to have the students decorate a box for their Valentine's mailbox, so shoe box or cereal box donations would be a big help.  I will be sending home a letter about the Valentine's party as well.

Along with Valentine's Day, parent/teacher conferences are this month. Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, February 14th from 1:30 to 6:30 pm, and on Thursday February 15th from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. I will be sending out assigned conference times so that parents can make arrangements to attend conferences. I really look forward to meeting with all of you to discuss your students progress.

Finally, Read Across America week begins at the end of February! Students love this time of year because we have guest readers and fun activities at school. We will be creating a class bulletin board to celebrate the event.

Please keep reading with your children every day. Practice is the best way to increase word recognition and fluency in their reading skills.

Have a great February!

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had an amazing winter break. January brings the annual Science Fair. The science fair will be on January 17th at 5pm. Students science projects will be on display for parents to see. In first grade, we are completing a class project on germs. The students are enjoying learning about germs and working on the project. I hope to see all the first grade parents at the science fair. January 17th will also be our PTSA night.

We have begun Module 4 in Eureka math. Students are learning how to identify tens and ones in two digit numbers. We will be using this skill to learn double digit addition. We will also be covering greater than and less than in this module.

Our spelling list increases in January as well. The students will now have 12 spelling words in stead of 8. We are now learning long vowel sounds so most of our spelling lists will be based on long vowels.

Please encourage students to complete their homework packets to practice their skills. Also, students should read at least 15 minutes each night.

I can't believe it's already December! These past few months have flown by. We have finished Modules 1 and 2 for Eureka Math. We begin Module 3 this month which is on measuring. First graders learn to measure with objects such as paper clips and blocks. They will move to actual measurements in second grade. Our spelling lists are getting harder each week so practice is the best way to ace the spelling tests. We are now learning vowel combinations for long vowels. Students are being introduced to bossy e and to combinations such as ai, ay, oa, ie, ea, and ee. Our reading goal is to have students reading 69 words per minute by the end of first grade. Students will enjoy practicing reading if the book is about something they are interested in. Please encourage your kids to read every day.

Mid-year Galileo testing begins next week as well as mid-year Dibels testing. These are benchmark tests that show us how much the students have grown. These tests will keep us busy for the next two weeks.

There will be a Santa shop this month. I am still waiting on the details, but I am sure they will be coming soon. In our classroom, we will be adding some creative activities to celebrate the holidays. I will be planning a small holiday celebration for the class as well. Enjoy our nice weather and Happy Holidays!

The holiday season has begun. The weather is finally getting cooler so we can enjoy our recess time more. November will bring a few days off for Thanksgiving. Before that happens, we will be busy in the classroom working on reading and subtraction. Students will have homework packets each week with their spelling words in them. Students should practice their spelling words each night. Students should also read each night. We have learned short vowel sounds and have worked on reading words with blends such as bl, st, and cl as well as diagraphs sh, wh, th, ch, and ck. Challenge your kids to read as many words as they can each night.

We will be learning about the first settlers to our country in social studies as well as the first Thanksgiving. Students will learn how the Native Americans and the Pilgrims worked together to help the Pilgrims grow crops. They celebrated with a feast which was the first Thanksgiving.

Our sheriff's cookout was on November 2nd and was a huge success. The sheriff's provided hot dogs and chips for the students and staff. The first graders received backpacks, school supplies, and a stuffed dog. The students were so excited to receive their gifts. We will be writing thank you notes this week for the sheriffs.

Have a wonderful November!

Hello Nadaburg Parents/Guardians,

October is a busy month for us. We have finished Module 1 in Eureka Math and have begun Module 2. We will be completing lessons 6-9 in our Journeys reading program. Feel free to check out the Journeys links on the Journeys page to view our stories and some additional information.

Red Ribbon Week is the week of October 23rd. Monday, students should wear as much red as possible to show they are against drugs. Tuesday, students should wear their favorite team jersey. Wednesday is spirit day and students should wear as much yellow and green as possible. Thursday is "wig out" day" which means students can wear crazy wigs or do their hair up in a crazy manner. There will be prizes and drawings all week to promote students being drug free.

Halloween is just around the corner. Our class will be having a small "Dip into fall" party to celebrate the day. Parents can send in snacks and dips for the students to share. These can include pretzels, chips, veggies, fruit, and dips that coordinate with the snacks. Dips can include peanut butter, caramel, ranch, and chip dip of any kind. Any snack donations is greatly appreciated!

Have a great October!
